Bonefish are a very highly prized gamefish in Florida.
Bonefish are fast swimmers and a challenge to catch. They are
most often caught with a spinning reel or fly fishing, but they
can also be caught off the bottoms in the deeper flats. When you
hook a bonefish in shallow water, be prepared for an exciting long
running fight.
Bonefish can be caught all year round in the Florida Keys. The
optimum months for bonefish fishing are March through October. The
food quality of the bonefish is so-so, they have lots of bones and are
edible, but there are lots of better quality food fish in the sea, so
catching and releasing bonefish is the best practice for
preserving them for future exciting sport fishing experiences.
- Bonefish mature when they are 3 to 4 years old and are about 18
inches long
- The most common weights caught are from 2 to 10 lbs
- The fully grown adult bonefish can grow as long as three feet
and weigh up into the mid to upper-teens
- Bonefish have been known to live as long as 23 years
